The medical team consisted of surgeons and medical staff ranging in subspecialties such as, Maxillofacial, Dentistry, Orthopedic, Pediatric Urology and General Surgery. Based in our partnered hospitals (37th Military Hospital) Accra and (Cape Coast Regional Hospital) Cape Coast, the medical team carried out over 30 surgeries throughout the ten-day period. Through collaborative efforts, each surgeon worked directly with an HHAF Nurse, a resident from the US and a local Ghanaian resident from our partnered hospital. While operating out of Cape Coast Regional Hospital, HHAF’s medical team director, Dr. Mendel Markowitz and his team operated on two patients whose surgeries were co-sponsored by HHAF and VODAFONE. The surgeries will be featured in an episode of VODAFONE’S new television and radio show, HEALTHLINE.
The humanitarian team provided and secured donations of fortified rice (from FEED MY STARVING CHILDREN) to children in Orphanages, Malnourished Feeding Centers and HIV/AIDS Clinics throughout several regions in Ghana. They also distributed V-Plenish vitamin supplement packets, wheelchairs and medicine. The team made vast advancements in the establishment of the Feeding Program by meeting with the Ministry of Defense to discuss future relations and collaborative efforts, traveling to and meeting with potential centers in order to properly asses their particular needs and in running small healthcare clinics throughout villages in the Volta region. The humanitarian team established a partnership with the FOCOS (a foundation focused on orthopedic and complex spine surgery) in a collaborative effort to provide to meals to malnourished children in order to prepare them for intensive surgery provided by FOCOS. While the majority of the team went back home to the states after the 10-day period, two representatives from the humanitarian team stayed in Ghana for a month in order to travel and assess new regions throughout Ghana in which HHAF can expand and sustain their programs.
